Friday Favorites – Week Ending March 23, 2007

Hi everyone! Coming to you today is this week’s edition of my Friday Favorites. I’m featuring posts this week from two blogs that are new to me, one blog that I’m stuck on, and a wonderful movie that I hope you’ll love.
Favorite #1 – Are you in a state of stagnation, implementation, or imagination? According to Jessica Hagy at Indexed, she shows us that it’s all in the balance of reality and ideas in her post “Yes, there is always another option.” This entire blog is incredibly creative, as Jessica uses a unique way to communicate her ideas. You’ve got to check it out.
Favorite #2 – It’s exciting to have a dream, something you’re shooting for, isn’t it? Isn’t it exciting, also, to hear about someone’s aspirations? How should you react when your friends share their dreams with you? How should others respond when you share your dreams with them? Kristian at Parable of Kristian offers some practical advice in a post entitled “when i tell you a dream, the Standard Operating Procedure is…” This is for those of you who’ve been looking for a way to answer your naysayers.
Favorite #3 – Do you want to make a difference in the world? How do you go about doing it? Manchild addresses this question and provides answers in his post, “Where Do You Get Your Ideas?” You don’t have to try to think of ways to make a difference all by yourself! Manchild tells you how. (Of course, for those of you who don’t know, Manchild is my wonderful husband.)
Favorite #4 – How will you spend the remainder of your dash? I discovered this beautiful movie entitled “The Dash” which will get you thinking about your life and how you will spend it. In fact, this movie and all the posts featured here compliment one another. Sit back and enjoy for a few minutes.

Because blogging is still relatively new for me, I’ve been exploring all sorts of concepts regarding social networking. Your Friday Favourites is one I am beginning to especially enjoy. In the vastness of the online world, with so much information to absorb, it’s nice to just read about a few of your favourites. It’s like a recommendation from a trusted friend. What could be better! It means I get to wake up Saturday morning and read the KWiz news over coffee before I head out to my Japanese class!
Thank you for doing this Friday Favourites! (I’m Canadian, so I’m sticking with the British spelling which uses ‘ou’ in many words instead of ‘o’ LOL)

I’m so glad you’re enjoying this weekly post. I try to present blogs that I think my readers will benefit from and enjoy, so I’m glad that it’s doing what I want it to do. I’m glad you consider me to be a trusted friend!
How long have you been taking Japanese? It seems with languages in which the letters are completely different may be a bit more challenging than languages that use the same letters as the English language. I tried Hebrew in seminary, and I a seriously hard time.

I started learning Japanese about 20 months ago, or so. It was in response to my enormous fascination with Asian Cinema. At first I started learning Thai because I was so enamoured with the film Ong Bak, that I wanted to understand what they were saying! Even though the film was/is subtitled in English, it wasn’t enough! This is just one example of how I can become obsessed with something LOL! Anyway, after trying to learn Thai for awhile I became frustrated with the lack of resources to learning Thai that were available to me on the web. By this time I had discovered ANIME (my heart beats rapidly…hahaha) and I really wanted to learn another language. There were so many fabulous resources on the web for learning Japanese that I chose that one. At the time, I knew very little about Japan, aside from Hiroshima, Nagasaki, sushi, and Yo Yo Ma. It’s been a fascinating journey and I’ve come to love learning the language. I love the Chinese characters and the symbolism and history behind them. Just awesome!

One of my former students took Mandarin Chinese in high school – interestingly, he was a cut-up. Nevertheless, he graduated high school, graduated college a couple of years ago, moved to China, and started a pizza restaurant there. He came back to speak to our students a several weeks ago, and he’s doing fabulous! It’s interesting when you take a route less traveled how much more exposed to life you can become.
