Out Of The Mouths Of Babes
By KWiz | January 16, 2007
Like many families, my family of origin (with which I grew up) is dysfunctional. We have had our problems, but right now, my father is really going through. My mom passed away in July 2006 from lung cancer (which she dealt with for six years). My father didn’t treat her very well at all (I won’t get into the specifics because you’d probably not believe it, and he’s my daddy – no matter what), and as a result, I believe he’s feeling a good amount of guilt which he is not processing very well. He’s 81 years old – I shouldn’t really expect that he would know how to really deal with his feelings about her death and what happened prior to it. Nevertheless, he is not making wise choices and, according to my younger brother (who lives with him – and that is an entire story unto itself), he’s been hurting himself.
What does this have to do with anything? I’m not trying to give you a sob story – we all have problems. However, the most amazing thing happened as I was putting my daughter to bed this evening.
My daughter and I always pray before I leave her room. We pray for various things – protection, provision, family, friends, those who are in need, those who are sick, sweet sleep and pleasant dreams… When we finished praying this evening, I was standing up to leave her room when she said,
“Pray for grandpa.”
I did not hesitate. I sat down, replied “okay,” and prayed that God keep grandpa healthy, that He protect him from harm, and that He help him make wise decisions. Mind you, I had not specifically mentioned grandpa in our first prayer tonite.
How many times do we dismiss what our children (whether they’re our own or not) say to us – especially when it appears what they’re saying is random? Can you recall times when a child (whether yours or not) gave you some wisdom and you blew it off thinking surely, that child can’t know more than me?
I can’t explain to you the feeling I experienced at the moment of my daughter’s imperative; all I know is God spoke through my beautiful, precocious 2-1/2 year old little girl. My daddy needs help right now at this moment, and God was calling on me through my daughter to intercede on his behalf.
I heard him…
