“To the Left, to the Left…” That’s My Song!

    By KWiz | January 13, 2007

My daughter is in that stage where the world revolves around her (at what stage of a child’s development does that change?  Never, you say?).  She’ll be 3 years old in May, but she already has an incredible vocabulary and enunciates so very well (I’m not really bragging here, no matter how indulgent it sounds).  Last summer she said the word “incapacitated,” (articulating all six syllables with incredible clarity) repeating the word as I used it to describe how my husband responds when he is in a deep sleep.  She also announced one day how she was “constipated” as she squatted in the middle of the kitchen floor grunting and pushing a bit (sorry for the detail – but really, I’m not).  Her ability to pronounce multi-syllable words with relative ease has floored me at times.

Indeed, my daughter does something to amaze me daily (I’m sure most mothers are with me on this).  She reads to me sometimes, and I marvel each time!  But what really got me going one day was this…  A song came on the radio on our way to school (she goes to daycare on the campus of the school where I teach) and Beyonce’s “To the Left, to the Left” came on.  She immediately said, “That’s my song!” as if me claiming a liking to the song would imply theft on my part.  So I respond to her by saying, “Yes, lovely lady, that’s your song.  She continued to softly sing the song, continuing to claim her ownership and rights to it.  If only Beyonce knew (I should tell her; maybe I might be able to get something out of it…).

In the wake of James Brown’s passing, she has also claimed his music as a whole.  The radio station we listen to played it and she listened intently.  Of course, they played a lot of his music immediately following his death in remembrance of him, but even though they aren’t playing it as much anymore, she still says, “I want James Brown.”  Looks like we’re now in the market to acquire some James Brown titles.

In the smallest of things, the little princess rules…and it is her song!
