A Health Issue I’m Nervous Writing About
By KWiz | December 27, 2006
As you can tell, I haven’t been blogging for very long at all. I try to write about topics that concern us women gaining and imparting wisdom relating to different areas of our lives. I have been comfortable writing in this blog so far - I don’t feel like I’ve disclosed too much that will embarrass me - at least not yet. I hope I’m not about to do it now.I came upon a blog entry entitled “That’s headache: Some women are allergic to sex.” The post reports,
“While a lot of women may feign headaches to avoid sex, some may just be allergic to the act, a study claims.”
Why am I writing about this? Quite frankly, because I thought I had this very problem years ago. I had chronic pain which manifested itself as unexplainable burning and irritation in my vulvar area. I was tested for infections, etc. Everything came up negative. My gynecologist at the time prescribed all sorts of things, but to no avail - and no relief. After several months of misdiagnosis and ineffective treatment, my gyn no longer seemed interested in helping me (because my case was now complicated in that in spite of all the treatment, I was not getting better). But she mentioned a condition I could possibly have - vulvodynia. I asked her what it was, but she was too interested in pushing me to the side so she wouldn’t have to deal with a case that could potentially be time-intensive. I never made another appointment with her again.
So I decided to do my own research. I went to several websites, one being the National Vulvodynia Association. According to the NVA,
“A frequently overlooked and under-researched chronic pain disorder, which affects 16% of women (one in six) in the United States, is gaining the attention it has long warranted. In the past few months, two prominent medical organizations, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP), have disseminated important documents on vulvodynia to their 150,000 cumulative members, alerting them to this often misdiagnosed and inappropriately treated women’s health condition.”
The above quote comes from their press release entitled,
“13 Million US Women Suffer Pain with Sex
Nearly Half are Misdiagnosed
Prominent Medical Groups Take Steps to Educate Physicians”
So if you are one of the 13 million US women who is suffering from symptoms of painful sex and you’ve not received relief, please look into this condition and call your gynecologist. I am not a doctor, but it is emotionally painful having to deal with a condition like this alone. In fact, I am sure that some women have doctors (and spouses and boyfriends) who think it’s “all in her head.” Of course, this is not helpful, and does more harm than good. (I can quite honestly say that my husband has always been so very supportive in our attempts to gain relief from this condition.)
Check out the site. It may give you (or someone you know) the answers you’ve been seeking.
(And I don’t feel I’ve embarrassed myself!)
